The Smell of Freedom: Lush gets behind the Free West Papua campaign

West Papua is one of the world’s forgotten conflicts, where human rights violations are endemic. Now Lush has taken up the cause. Ruth Styles has more

Everyone has heard of Papua New Guinea but few know much about its western neighbour – West Papua. Comprising the western half of the Papua New Guinea island; the province has been ruled from Indonesia since 1963, when the UN, with the proviso that the native Papuans be given the chance to decide their own fate, transferred power to that country. In 1969, the ‘Act of Free Choice’ gave 1,064 Indonesian appointed Papuan officials the chance to decide whether or not to become independent or remain part of Indonesia. Unsurprisingly, they chose the latter.

Indonesia must investigate mine strike protest killing

The Indonesian authorities must immediately investigate the use of deadly force by police at a mining protest, Amnesty International said today after one protester was killed and at least six injured.
Indonesian security forces opened fire on striking workers of a gold and copper mine in the eastern province of Papua run by US company Freeport-Mcmoran on Monday. Some 8,000 workers at the mine have been on strike since 15 September, after demands for a pay rise reached a deadlock.

“This latest incident shows that Indonesian police have not learned how to deal with protesters without resorting to excessive, and even lethal, force,” said Sam Zarifi, Amnesty International’s Asia Pacific Director.

Activists detained for attending consolidation meeting

Indonesian police have detained ten West Papuan activists in Jayapura on Thursday ahead of a critical meeting for the pro-independence West Papua National Authority (WPNA), according to local sources.
As many as 1825 West Papuan independence activists had arrived in Jayapura aboard the KM Sinabung on October 6 to begin a consolidation conference of the WPNA.  The Conference, to be held on October 8-9, was to determine the political position of WPNA ahead of the historic Third Papuan Peoples‘ Congress, a gathering of all the elements of West Papua’s disparate resistance movement to agree on a common strategy towards fulfilling the demand for Papuan self-determination.  The Congress, expected to go ahead from October 16-19 at Cenderawasih University was called by the West Papua National Committee, and has gained support from most sectors of the Papuan civil society.
Despite the mass circulation of SMS messages, believed to be from intelligence sources, across Papua that Jakarta was not going to oppose the Congress and the ability for Papuan people to organise dialogue under their own terms, Jayapura police have detained key WPNA organisers for possessing “separatist materials”. Pandora and the paradise of West Papua Melanesia under siege: See the similarities.

” Why independence for West Papua Melanesia is inevitable”

The land of Pandora in the blockbuster movie hit Avatar has a reality resemblense with the paradise of West Papua Melanesia, and the unequal fight with bows and arrows against economic exploitation backed by a huge military power. Please see the similarities between Avatar and in real life, the untold story to the free world of West Papua Melanesia and its inhabitants.

West Papua is considered to be the Garden of Eden: Pacific with tropical forrests, uninhabited white sandbeaches, a paradise which really exists, and yet being under brutal military control, without allowing foreign press of any kind. West Papua ’s rainforrest equals the Amazon forrest and yet are being destroyed with illegal logging. Also West Papua’s numerous beaches and sea-sides are being kept unexploited and NOT promoted for tourism because of a top priority given to the touristic island of Bali, which in fact cannot compete with Papua’s beautiful bounties. This is a typical case of active UNDEVELOPMENT of the Papua region by the brutal regime. Continue reading
